It will be seventeen years before my father introduces me to his specific dissatisfaction. The audience will occur in a room where we’ve curdled the paint from the walls, where we’ve warped the joists and spidered the glass, and in tatters he’ll turn to leave. He’ll pause at the door, left hand on doorframe, right hand on knob. He’ll shake us our hands without looking back.

I wish I could’ve known you in my twenties, he’ll say, I think we would’ve been great friends.

Wayne will shuffle away. His dissatisfaction and I remain to talk amongst ourselves.
